Through the Walls

Melanie sat curled in the dark stairwell behind the door that led to all the bedrooms. Where is Elken? She had been rolling the vial around in her hands as anxiety seeped into her bones. He had said he would be right behind her.

Has he abandoned me? Melanie felt herself shrinking. I…I wanted to trust him!

The negative thoughts followed. But look at what happened when you did. You trusted him to return, and he broke his promise.

Melanie shook her head, defying the voice of distrust for the first time. No. Maybe something happened to him? What if he was caught?

Hearing voices and laughter, she pressed an ear against the door. Was it Elken?

“Oh, I’m glad that’s over!” one hunter said. The voice was too gruff to be Elken’s.

“Agreed!” the other replied. His accent was too heavy. “Look at what that boy’s talons did to my wrist.”

“They’re the maze’s problem now,” said the first hunter.

Melanie held her breath as the hunters walked past. What did that guard mean by “the boy’s talons”? She slunk even further into the shadows, turning to her heartlink for comfort.

“Scalaed? Can you hear me?” she whispered in a voice so soft the dust in the air didn’t move. “I’m here, buddy. I will come for you and Jason. Be strong.”

The heartlink beat even more faintly now. But there was a twinge of hope in the rhythm.
